Calcedonia is a very unique type of glass. It starts with a silver glass base, then one must add different metal compounds. When all of the correct parts are melted together, under ideal circumstances, incredible color combinations can be achieved. The catch is, not all the factors can be controlled. One of the key ingredients is copper, which becomes rather unpredictable when you melt it. Some other pieces of the puzzle are still unknown, or if they are known, nobody is sharing. I believe the weather has something to do with it. Different barometric pressures are the big thing, and maybe even the rain, which is usually accompanied by a barometric change. Nobody knows for sure, "It's voodoo man.". Every time I melt a crucible full of calcedonia its never the same as the last batch, at least not exactly. Sometimes it is wildly different, too. For this reason it is almost impossible to duplicate a color pattern from one piece to another, even if the two pieces come from the same pot of glass. Assuming everything in the process is going well up to this point, its not as easy as just dipping in and voila magic color bonanza! One must still manipulate the color through a series of heating and cooling procedures to get really great results. Then more glass clear glass is gathered over the calcedonia and it is shaped into a piece of art.
